Cobblestones

Uneven stones fill the foreground of a tree-lined street in Old Town Alexandria. Craig photographed them in the summer of 1978, bringing the camera low enough for the surface itself to become the subject. Rounded edges, irregular joints and shifting light reveal the character of the paving. Parked cars and distant buildings place the texture within a living street. Cobblestones invites a slower kind of looking, beginning underfoot with details that are easy to pass by.
