Through the Tunnel
Shot on FilmThe dark mouth of a tunnel frames a small red railcar on a steep stretch of track at Mount Pilatus, Switzerland. Craig dates the photograph to 1982. Beyond the stone opening, green vegetation and daylight pull the eye toward the approaching train. The photograph preserves the anticipation of that passage: a vehicle coming closer, a route disappearing uphill and a view made more vivid by the surrounding darkness. A mountain journey briefly becomes a scene within a scene.
