The Rim at Last Light

A pine at the Grand Canyon's edge catches the sun's final rays while the rock layers below sink into shadow. Craig's photograph places a single tree against the immense landscape, giving the viewer a nearby detail through which to enter the scene. Warm light picks out its branches and the rim around it. Farther out, the canyon becomes quieter and less distinct, making the small sunlit foreground feel especially brief and vivid.
