Tracks to Nowhere

Parallel rails draw the eye into an East Berlin rail yard, where tall lamps and empty tracks give the scene an unsettled stillness. Craig photographed it in 1982, recalling connections suddenly severed by the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961. Tracks to Nowhere gives that memory a visible form. The converging lines suggest journeys that should continue beyond the frame, while his story recalls a city where political division could abruptly bring movement to a halt.
