Above the Cloud Line

An aircraft engine fills one corner of a blue view above clouds and distant terrain. Craig made the photograph during a TWA flight from Los Angeles to Washington, recalling the airline's nonstop Ocean to Ocean service in the late 1970s. The visible engine gives the vast aerial scene a familiar point of scale. Beyond it, land and cloud merge into layers of color, preserving the particular wonder of watching a continent pass beneath an airplane window.
